Imaginative and frenetic, this Nickelodeon series co-created and voiced by "Saturday Night Live's" Amy Poehler has the kind of crazed energy and inventiveness that isn't associated often enough with girl-oriented children's fare. Poehler's Bessie Higgenbottom is a committed Honeybee (like the Girl Scouts, I guess) determined to claim every possible merit badge, which she pursues while drifting into superheroic flights of fancy in which she can leap tall buildings. The concept should strike a receptive chord with kids and won't have parents gnashing their teeth.
It’s hard to believe life for Audrey Hepburn was ever anything but smart clothes, quirky expressions, and wistful gazes into the eyes of Cary Grant, but Cardillo makes a strong case to the contrary. Growing up in WWII–era Europe, Audrey wanted only to be a dancer, but the other girls made fun of her physical hurdles: “She was too tall, her feet were too big, and her neck was too long,” and “her eyes seemed too big for her head.” Young readers will get the message: these were precisely the traits that made Audrey an iconic beauty as an adult. In short order, she was spotted by entertainment heavyweights for her je ne sais quoi and quickly catapulted to fame. Denos’ soft pastel illustrations cut just the right Audrey outline (complete with flapping neck scarf), and fans will especially enjoy picking out the movie roles depicted in a two-page spread of costumes. The DVD was a labor of love for co-creators/producers/directors, Ryan Poore and Scott Anderson. Both men had full-time jobs so production on the series was done in their spare time within a five year span (December 2004 - November 2009) in seven different cities in three states. Jim, Who Ran Away from His Nurse, and Was Eaten by a Lion [Hardcover]
Parents who will stop at nothing to make their children behave may want to present this Victorian cautionary talein good spirit, of course. Belloc's Jim is very well provided for in his self-controlled parents' home. The naughty boy defects, though, running away from Nurse, and is eaten by a zoo lion. Chess's art shows off the splendor of indoor life in those days: trim, warm interiors with a la mode wallpaper and draperies. She also presents very personable zoo bears, ant-eaters, Ponto the lion and a very veracious zookeeper. The images herein (Jim's gulp by gulp journey into the lion; his head rolling around on the pavement) make a lasting impressionbeware cautionary tales! Ages 7-up.
